Where Community Takes Root: Celebrating 50 Years of the Nihonmachi Street Fair
San Francisco's Japantown has a vibrant pulse, and at its heart beats the Nihonmachi Street Fair. Born in the early 1970s from a grassroots movement, this wasn't just a celebration of Japanese culture; it was a fight to preserve a community facing displacement and bring a voice to Asian Americans. Over five decades, the fair has blossomed from a humble gathering to a cultural phenomenon, reflecting the rich tapestry of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) heritage in San Francisco.
This year, join us as we celebrate not just music, food, and community, but the enduring legacy of the Nihonmachi Street Fair. Step back in time and experience the evolution of this beloved tradition, and step forward into a future brimming with cultural pride and artistic expression.
Last year with the generous support of the APA Heritage Foundation, nonprofit organization’s application fees were waived. 30 AAPI nonprofits along with City/State agencies participated.
